Plokkfletting

Plokkfletting is a traditional Norwegian knitting technique used to create a reversible fabric with two distinct colors and patterns. It is also known as "Norwegian purl knitting" or "double knitting" in some contexts, though it differs from standard double knitting. The technique involves working with two colors simultaneously, but instead of knitting two separate layers, the stitches of one color are purled simultaneously with the knit stitches of the other color. This creates a single, thick fabric where each side displays the inverse of the other.

The core of plokkfletting lies in the careful manipulation of the yarn. For each stitch, one yarn is knitted and the other is purled. This means the knitter must manage two strands of yarn at all times, keeping them in the correct position relative to the needle and the work. When knitting with yarn A, yarn B is typically held at the back and purled, and vice versa. The resulting fabric is dense and warm, making it ideal for items like mittens, hats, and sweaters.

Historically, plokkfletting was used to create decorative and functional garments in Norway, often featuring geometric patterns or motifs inspired by nature. The technique requires practice to master, as maintaining consistent tension and managing the two yarns can be challenging for beginners. However, the unique and beautiful reversible fabric it produces is highly prized. Variations exist, with some methods allowing for more complex colorwork and patterns.
