Pivnice

Pivnice is a type of drinking establishment found mainly in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, centered on serving beer to customers. The word derives from pivo, beer, and in everyday language refers to a casual venue where beer is the primary product, often with simple food and seating.

Historically, pivnice emerged in towns and along brewing sites as social hubs for workers and residents to drink and converse. In the 19th and 20th centuries they became a key part of local drink culture, evolving from inns and taverns into dedicated beer halls in many towns.

A typical pivnice offers a straightforward setting—wooden tables and benches or counter seating—focused on draft beer from taps, with a smaller selection of bottled beers. The beer served is usually Czech lagers, especially pilsners and related styles, though some establishments feature regional specialties or craft beers. Food, when offered, consists of inexpensive, simple dishes and snacks that accompany beer.

Pivnice serve as social spaces where people gather after work, to watch sports, or to talk with friends and colleagues. While many remain traditional and modest, urban areas have seen modern pivnice that emphasize craft beer, newer branding, and contemporary interiors, sometimes merging with gastropub concepts.
