Pinochetin

Pinochetin is a colloquial term referring to the political and economic system implemented in Chile during the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, which lasted from 1973 to 1990. This period was characterized by authoritarian rule, suppression of dissent, and significant economic liberalization.

Economically, Pinochet's regime embraced neoliberal policies, often referred to as the "Chicago Boys" reforms. These included privatization of state-owned enterprises, deregulation, trade liberalization, and fiscal austerity. The stated goal was to reduce the size and influence of the state in the economy and promote free market principles. Supporters credit these policies with stabilizing the Chilean economy, reducing inflation, and fostering sustained growth in later years, though critics point to increased income inequality and social costs.

Politically, the Pinochet era was marked by the suspension of democratic institutions, censorship, and widespread human rights abuses. Political parties were banned, and opponents of the regime faced imprisonment, torture, exile, and enforced disappearances. The military maintained a strong grip on power, with Pinochet serving as president. Following a plebiscite in 1988, a transition to democracy began in 1990, though Pinochet retained significant influence as commander-in-chief of the army until 1998 and later as a senator for life.
