Austerity is a policy approach aimed at reducing government budget deficits and debt accumulation through spending cuts, tax increases, or a combination of both. It is most often implemented as part of fiscal consolidation during or after financial or sovereign debt crises and is intended to reassure financial markets, lower interest costs, and restore long-run macroeconomic stability.

Policies commonly used include reductions in public spending on health, education, and welfare; freezes or cuts to public-sector wages; reform of pensions; higher taxes; and measures such as privatization or increased user fees. The aim is to improve the cyclically adjusted balance and debt trajectory, while preserving essential macroeconomic stabilizers.

Austerity has been pursued in various countries since the late 2000s, notably in the United Kingdom after 2010 and across several European economies facing debt crises, including Greece, Ireland, Portugal, and Spain. The policy is often debated in terms of trade-offs between short-term economic pain and long-term debt sustainability.

Proponents contend that fiscal consolidation is necessary to restore credibility, reduce borrowing costs, and prevent spiraling debt. Critics argue that large, premature, or poorly designed austerity can depress demand, raise unemployment, and worsen inequality, potentially slowing growth and delaying debt reduction. Empirical assessments yield mixed results, with outcomes depending on macroeconomic context, policy design, and the stance of monetary policy.
