Pinnalisation

Pinnalisation refers to the surgical procedure in which the auricle (external ear) is repositioned or reshaped to correct deformities, enhance aesthetic appearance, or address functional issues. This technique is commonly associated with otoplasty, a broader term for ear surgery, but it specifically focuses on altering the structure of the pinna (the visible part of the ear).

The procedure is often performed to address congenital ear deformities such as prominent ears, where the ears protrude excessively from the head, or other structural abnormalities. Pinnalisation can also be used to correct injuries or trauma-related ear deformities. The goal is to achieve a more balanced and harmonious ear shape that aligns with the patient’s facial features.

During the procedure, the surgeon may adjust the antihelical fold (the crease behind the ear) or reposition the concha (the hollow area of the ear) to create a more natural contour. Techniques may include scoring, suturing, or the removal of small amounts of cartilage to reshape the ear. The surgery is typically performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity and the patient’s preference.

Recovery from pinnalisation usually involves wearing a compression bandage or headband to support the new ear shape and reduce swelling. Patients may experience some discomfort, bruising, or swelling in the days following the procedure, but these symptoms generally subside within a few weeks. Long-term results are typically permanent, though minor adjustments may be needed over time as the ear heals.

Pinnalisation is considered a safe and effective procedure when performed by a qualified surgeon with experience in otoplasty. As with any surgery, potential risks and complications—such as infection, asymmetry, or adverse reactions to anesthesia—should be discussed with the surgeon before proceeding. The decision to undergo pinnalisation is often based on both aesthetic and psychological factors, as many patients seek the procedure to improve self-confidence and overall appearance.
