Pinefield originated as a railroad stop in the late 19th century and grew through the 20th century as a service community for nearby forestry and farming areas. In most depictions it has a diversified economy and a stable tax base.

Governance is described as a mayor-council system with a five-member council that oversees departments such as public works, police, fire, and parks and recreation. The population is generally depicted as 8,000 to 10,000 residents, with a median age in the high 30s and a mix of rental and owner-occupied housing.
