Pilootsignalen, a term originating from Dutch, refers to a system of visual signals used in maritime navigation to communicate with pilots. These signals are employed when a ship is approaching a pilot station or when a pilot needs to board or disembark. The primary purpose of pilootsignalen is to ensure the safety of both the vessel and the pilot, particularly in conditions of poor visibility or when communication via radio is not feasible or reliable.

The signals are typically displayed using flags or lights. Common flag signals include specific shapes and colors that convey messages such as "Pilot boat required," "Pilot on board," or "Pilot boat not available." For example, the international maritime signal flag "G" is often used to indicate that a vessel requires a pilot. When a pilot is on board, a different signal may be hoisted to inform other vessels.

In terms of lights, especially at night or in fog, specific patterns of flashing or colored lights are utilized. These light signals are standardized and are part of international maritime regulations.
