Pilgrimsrute

Pilgrimsrute is a term used in Norwegian to denote a pilgrimage route—a pathway traveled by pilgrims to sacred sites. The concept covers historical routes across Europe and other regions, as well as contemporary trails that blend religious devotion with cultural heritage and outdoor recreation.

Historically, pilgrimage has been a central practice in many faiths. In Europe, medieval routes connected major sanctuaries such as Jerusalem, Rome, and Santiago de Compostela; in the Nordic region, routes developed that led to Trondheim and other sacred sites. The best-known example in Norway is the St. Olav's Way, a long-distance pilgrimage route to Nidaros Cathedral that has seen revival in modern times.

In modern times, such routes are maintained as cultural and tourist assets. They are often marked with waypoints, maps, and signage; facilities such as hostels and pilgrim offices may be available; travelers may carry pilgrim passports to collect stamps as proof of progress.
