Pile-supported, also written as pile-supported or pilesupported, refers to a structural system in which most of the building’s vertical loads are transferred through piles into deeper, more competent soil or rock layers. Piles reach bearing strata beyond the influence of weak surface soils, and a pile cap or other load-distributing element ties the piles together to form a stable support.

Piles used in pile-supported structures can be composed of concrete (reinforced or pre-stressed), steel, or timber, and may be installed as end-bearing piles, friction piles, or a combination. End-bearing piles transfer load primarily through a contact with a strong layer at depth, while friction piles rely on skin friction along the pile shaft. Installation methods include driven piles, bored or drilled shafts, and, in some markets, screw piles or vibro-piles. The choice depends on soil conditions, load requirements, noise and vibration constraints, and accessibility.

Design considerations for pile-supported structures include vertical and lateral load capacity, pile group effects, settlement behavior, and redundancy. A pile cap or beam typically connects piles to form a unified foundation, and geotechnical analysis guides pile count, spacing, and depth. Pile testing, such as static load tests or dynamic tests, is commonly used to verify performance before or during construction.

Common applications are buildings on soft or variable soils, bridges and elevated structures, foundations in high water tables, and offshore or waterfront facilities. Advantages include suitability for poor surface soils and rapid construction in certain contexts; limitations involve cost, soil disturbance, and the need for thorough geotechnical investigation.
