Phishingmetoder refer to the various techniques used by cybercriminals to trick individuals into revealing sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, credit card details, and personal identification numbers. These methods often impersonate legitimate organizations or individuals, creating a sense of trust and urgency to encourage the victim's cooperation.

One common approach is email phishing, where attackers send emails that appear to be from trusted sources like banks, social media platforms, or online retailers. These emails typically contain malicious links or attachments. Clicking on a link might lead to a fake website designed to look identical to the real one, where users are prompted to enter their login credentials. Opening an attachment can install malware on the victim's device, which can then steal information or grant the attacker remote access.

Another prevalent method is spear phishing, a more targeted form of phishing that focuses on specific individuals or organizations. Attackers gather information about their target beforehand, making the phishing attempt more personalized and therefore more convincing. Whaling is a subtype of spear phishing that specifically targets high-profile individuals within an organization, such as CEOs or senior executives, aiming for access to high-value data or financial assets.

SMS phishing, or smishing, utilizes text messages to deliver malicious links or requests for information. These messages often mimic legitimate service alerts or delivery notifications. Voice phishing, or vishing, involves phone calls where attackers impersonate representatives from legitimate companies to extract sensitive data. Attackers may use caller ID spoofing to make the call appear to originate from a genuine number.

The success of phishing methods relies heavily on social engineering, manipulating human psychology rather than exploiting technical vulnerabilities. Common tactics include creating a sense of fear, urgency, or curiosity, or offering enticing rewards. Awareness and caution are crucial defenses against these evolving threats.
