Petroleumsinntekter, or petroleum revenue, refers to the income generated from the extraction, production, and sale of crude oil and natural gas. These revenues are a significant economic resource for many countries, particularly those with substantial oil and gas reserves. Norway, for instance, is one of the world’s largest exporters of petroleum, with its revenues playing a crucial role in the national economy and welfare system.

The management of petroleum revenues is often a subject of political and economic debate. In countries heavily dependent on oil exports, such as Norway, the revenues are typically managed through sovereign wealth funds. Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global (formerly the Oil Fund) is one of the largest in the world, designed to ensure long-term financial stability by investing surplus oil revenues in global markets. This approach helps mitigate the risks of economic fluctuations tied to oil price volatility.

In other nations, petroleum revenues may be used to fund public services, infrastructure development, or social programs. However, mismanagement or over-reliance on oil income can lead to economic instability, known as the "resource curse." This phenomenon occurs when a country’s dependence on a single commodity—like petroleum—creates economic imbalances, corruption, or underdeveloped industries.

The distribution of petroleum revenues also varies by country. Some nations, such as Norway, use a portion of the income to support public welfare, including healthcare, education, and pensions. Others may face challenges in equitably distributing wealth, particularly in regions with limited alternative economic opportunities.
