Peruskäyttöohjelmisto, often translated as basic operating software or foundational software, refers to the essential programs that allow a computer or device to function and interact with the user and other software. These are the fundamental building blocks that manage hardware resources and provide a platform for other applications to run.

The most common example of peruskäyttöohjelmisto is an operating system (OS). Examples include Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. The OS handles tasks such as memory management, process scheduling, file system management, and input/output operations. It acts as an intermediary between the user and the computer's hardware, making it possible for users to interact with the device through a graphical user interface (GUI) or command-line interface (CLI).

Beyond the operating system, peruskäyttöohjelmisto can also encompass essential system utilities and drivers.
