In these uses, permeantie is described as a holistic descriptor of how effectively a material or system allows substances (permeants) to pass through it under specified conditions. Rather than representing a single physical quantity, permeantie is often treated as an umbrella notion that can encompass factors such as permeability, selectivity, sorption, and transport kinetics.

Origins and usage vary by author and field. The word combines a Latin-root sense of permeating with a suffix intended to evoke a collective measure of permeation capability. Because there is no universal definition, its precise meaning, units, and methods of determination differ across sources, and it is found mainly in niche, speculative, or preparatory discussions rather than in standard reference works.
