Perinnöllisyysanalyysi, often translated as heritability analysis, is a statistical concept used in genetics and quantitative genetics to estimate the proportion of variation in a particular trait within a population that is attributable to genetic factors. It is not a measure of how much of a trait an individual inherits, but rather how much of the differences in that trait among individuals in a population are due to differences in their genes.

Heritability is typically expressed as a value between 0 and 1, or as a percentage. A heritability of 1 (or 100%) would mean that all variation in the trait is due to genetic differences. Conversely, a heritability of 0 (or 0%) would indicate that all variation is due to environmental factors or random chance. Many traits have heritabilities somewhere in between these extremes.

It is crucial to understand that heritability is population-specific and environment-specific. A heritability estimate for a trait in one population may not apply to another population, especially if they live in different environments. Furthermore, heritability does not imply that a trait is fixed or unchangeable. Traits with high heritability can still be significantly influenced by environmental interventions. For example, height has a high heritability, but nutrition and healthcare can still impact average height in a population.

Common methods for estimating heritability include twin studies, adoption studies, and quantitative genetic analyses of pedigreed populations. These methods compare the similarity of individuals with known genetic relatedness to disentangle the effects of genes and environment. Heritability analysis is a fundamental tool for understanding the genetic architecture of complex traits and diseases.
