Peri-implanttiitti is an inflammatory condition affecting the tissues surrounding a dental implant. It is characterized by inflammation of the gums and bone loss around the implant, similar to periodontitis around natural teeth. The condition is thought to be caused by bacterial plaque accumulation, leading to an inflammatory response that can damage the supporting bone. Risk factors for peri-implanttiitti include poor oral hygiene, a history of periodontitis, smoking, and certain systemic diseases like diabetes.

Symptoms of peri-implanttiitti can include redness, swelling, and bleeding of the gums around the implant. As the condition progresses, pain and pus discharge may occur. In advanced stages, bone loss can lead to implant instability and eventual failure. Diagnosis is typically made through clinical examination, probing of the implant sulcus, and radiographic assessment of bone loss.

Treatment for peri-implanttiitti aims to control the bacterial infection and manage inflammation. This usually involves thorough cleaning of the implant surface to remove plaque and calculus, often with specialized instruments to avoid damaging the implant. Antibiotics may also be prescribed to reduce bacterial load. In cases of significant bone loss, surgical intervention might be necessary to debride the implant surface and attempt bone regeneration. Prevention is key and involves meticulous oral hygiene practices, regular professional cleanings, and early detection of any signs of inflammation.
