Penetratingtestejä, often shortened to pentesting, is a simulated cyberattack against a computer system, network, or web application to identify security vulnerabilities. The goal is to find weaknesses that a real attacker could exploit. Penetration testers use the same tools and techniques as malicious hackers, but with the owner's permission. This process helps organizations understand their security posture and take proactive measures to protect their assets.

There are several types of penetration testing. Black box testing involves the tester having no prior knowledge of the target system, mimicking an external attacker. White box testing provides the tester with full knowledge of the system, allowing for a more thorough and in-depth analysis. Gray box testing falls in between, where the tester has some limited knowledge of the system.

The phases of a penetration test typically include reconnaissance, scanning, gaining access, maintaining access, and finally, analysis and reporting. During reconnaissance, testers gather information about the target. Scanning uses various tools to identify open ports and services. Gaining access involves exploiting identified vulnerabilities. Maintaining access allows the tester to explore the system further and assess the potential impact of a breach. The final phase involves documenting all findings, including discovered vulnerabilities, their severity, and recommendations for remediation.

Penetration testing is a crucial component of a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy. It helps organizations comply with regulations, prevent data breaches, and build trust with their customers by demonstrating a commitment to security. Regular penetration tests are recommended, especially after significant system changes or in response to evolving threat landscapes.
