Pendjari

Pendjari commonly refers to the Pendjari National Park, a protected area in northwestern Benin named after the Pendjari River, which runs through the landscape and forms part of the border with Burkina Faso. The park is part of the transboundary W-Arly-Pendjari Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage–listed ecosystem that spans Benin, Burkina Faso, and Niger.

Geography and ecology: Located in the Atakora region, Pendjari National Park encompasses a savanna and riverine landscape along the Pendjari River. The reserve protects a mosaic of habitats that supports large mammals such as elephants, buffalo, hippos, and various antelope species, as well as predators like lions. Bird life is diverse, and the rivers attract resident and migratory species. The climate is tropical savanna, with a distinct dry season and a wet season that influence wildlife movements and vegetation.

Conservation and status: Pendjari is managed as a protected area within Benin’s national network of parks and is integral to cross-border conservation efforts within the W-Arly-Pendjari Complex. The site faces ongoing challenges such as poaching, illegal hunting, and habitat pressure, but it benefits from regional cooperation, anti-poaching measures, and community engagement aimed at preserving wildlife populations and ecological integrity.

Tourism and access: The park is a major safari destination in Benin, popular for guided 4x4 drives and wildlife viewing during the dry season, typically from November to February. Access is through regional towns and park gates, with visitor facilities and park staff providing information on safety, conservation, and local culture.
