Pencil2D

Pencil2D is a free and open-source application for creating 2D animation, with a focus on traditional hand-drawn animation. It combines bitmap painting and vector drawing in a simple, lightweight interface suitable for beginners and hobbyists.

Artists can sketch and ink with a range of brush and pencil tools, switch between raster and vector layers, and organize artwork on a timeline. The program supports onion skinning to see previous and next frames, as well as frame-by-frame playback, layers, and basic transforms.

Projects are saved in Pencil2D's native file format and can be exported as image sequences or movie files using external encoders. The software runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Pencil2D is a community-driven project released under an open-source license. Development is carried out by volunteers who contribute features, bug fixes, and documentation, making the project a viable option for students and indie animators.
