Pelag

Pelag is a coastal town and municipality in the fictional archipelago of Neridia. It sits on the southern shore of Pelag Bay and serves as the administrative center of Pelag Municipality.

The name Pelag comes from the Pelagan language, meaning 'harbor gate' or 'watcher of the sea'.

Pelag occupies a crescent bay bordered by rolling hills and terraced fields. The climate is temperate Mediterranean-like, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The harbor is naturally sheltered, supporting a small commercial fleet and a marina.

Founded in the 13th century by seafaring traders, Pelag developed as a trading port under successive regional powers. The arrival of steamships in the 19th century spurred modernization, including paved streets, a public market, and a fish port. The town gained municipal autonomy in the late 20th century.

The population is ethnically and linguistically diverse; Pelagan is the predominant language, with minority communities speaking neighboring dialects.

Traditionally based on fishing and seafood processing, Pelag has diversified into tourism, boat building, and light manufacturing. The harbor and marina attract visitors, and local markets sell seafood, crafts, and regional products.

Key sites include Pelag Harbor, the 19th-century Old Lighthouse, and the Pelag Museum of Maritime History. The annual Harbor Festival in summer features boat races and seafood fairs.

Pelag is connected by a coastal road network to inland towns and by regional ferry to neighboring islands. A small airstrip serves general aviation; the nearest international airport is in a regional city several hours away.

Pelag Bay is the bay on which the town sits, and the surrounding Neridia archipelago comprises several inhabited and uninhabited islets.
