Steamships are ships propelled by steam engines, typically driving propellers or paddle wheels. They emerged in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and gradually transformed maritime transport by enabling regular schedules and independent movement, regardless of wind conditions. Early steamers were initially used on inland waterways, but soon moved to ocean service, where the combination of steam power with innovative hulls and propulsion made long-distance travel practical.

In the 1830s and 1840s, screw propulsion and iron or later steel hulls enabled more efficient ocean travel, leading to a rapid expansion of transoceanic passenger and cargo service. Notable milestones include the early demonstration of sustained steam navigation on the Atlantic and the development of reliable, large steamships designed specifically for offshore routes. Technological advances in steam engineering—such as condensing engines, compound and higher-pressure designs, and improved boilers—augmented efficiency, while the shift from paddle wheels to screw propellers improved performance in rough seas.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, steam power remained dominant for most large ships, with steam turbines increasingly used on premier passenger liners for greater speed and reliability. The advent of diesel and gas-turbine propulsion in the mid-20th century led to a gradual decline of traditional reciprocating steam engines in new ships, though steam and steam-turbine propulsion continued in some vessels for several decades.

Today, steam propulsion persists mainly in niche roles, such as heritage river steamboats, certain ceremonial ships, and a few coastal or excursion vessels, while most modern ships rely on internal combustion engines or gas turbines. Steamships played a foundational role in shaping global trade and naval power, leaving a lasting impact on maritime technology and operations.
