Peatumaritual is a term used in folklore and environmental ethnography to describe a family of ceremonial practices centered on peatlands, especially bogs. The term blends peat, the waterlogged deposit characteristic of wetlands, with ritual, and is typically encountered in fictional ethnographies, regional folklore collections, and contemporary environmental discourse rather than in formal religious systems.

Practices commonly involve gatherings at bog margins during particular seasons or weather cues. Participants may perform processions, light a peat-fire in a sheltered bowl, offer plant fibers, seeds, or small peat bricks to the water and turf, and recite verses or chants. Symbolic acts—walking prescribed patterns along the bog edge, tracing water channels, or placing stones—are intended to honor wetland processes and to invite rain, fertility, or balance within the local ecosystem. Objects often include carved wooden staffs, bog moss, dried peat fragments, and simple drums or rattles.

Significance and use: In many accounts, peatumaritual functions as a form of ecological reverence, a seasonal marker, and a community ritual that reinforces stewardship of fragile wetlands. In modern contexts, it has been adopted by environmental groups as a symbolic framework for peatland restoration and climate-conscious storytelling, rather than as a historically continuous practice.
