Pauropoda

Pauropoda is a class of tiny, primitive myriapods within the subphylum Myriapoda. It is one of the four major groups of myriapods, alongside Diplopoda (millipedes), Chilopoda (centipedes), and Symphyla. Approximately a few hundred described species are known, and pauropods occur in soils and leaf litter worldwide, especially in moist microhabitats.

Pauropods are among the smallest myriapods, typically about 0.5 to 2 millimeters long. They are white or translucent and largely lack pigmentation. Most species are blind or possess only simple eyes. A distinctive feature is their two branched antennae. The body is soft and segmented, and the number of leg-bearing segments increases during development through molts, a pattern known as anamorphic development, so the total number of leg pairs can change as they mature.

Ecology and biology: Pauropods inhabit soil, moss, and decaying vegetation, often in humid, cryptic environments. They feed on fungal hyphae, bacteria, plant detritus, and other microscopic organic matter, contributing to the breakdown of in soil ecosystems. Because of their small size and cryptic lifestyle, they are infrequently observed, and much of what is known about their biology comes from soil samples and laboratory studies.

Taxonomy and evolution: Pauropoda represents a small, ancient lineage within myriapods. The fossil record is limited, but pauropods are regarded as one of the more primitive myriapod groups. They are primarily of interest to scientists studying soil ecology, early arthropod evolution, and the diversity of life within the soil food web.
