Patchbay
A patchbay, also known as a patch bay, is a hardware device used in audio and broadcast systems to route signals between different pieces of equipment. It consists of a metal chassis mounted in a rack and a grid of input and output jacks, commonly 1/4 inch in size. Signals can be connected or redirected by inserting patch cables, allowing rapid reconfiguration of a studio’s signal paths without moving cables behind each device.
Most patchbays employ a two-row layout where each pair of jacks represents a single signal path. The
Patchbays come in passive and active configurations. Passive bays are simple and rely on the connected equipment
Common uses include routing outputs to different inputs, reconfiguring preamps, effects loops, and monitor systems, or
