Patagones

Patagones is a partido (department) in the southeast of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Its administrative seat is the city of Carmen de Patagones. The partido is located along the Atlantic coast and sits on the southern bank of the Río Negro estuary, opposite the city of Viedma in Río Negro Province. The two cities are connected by the Patagones–Viedma bridge, making the area a notable cross-river axis.

Geography and climate

The territory encompasses coastal plains and estuary landscapes typical of the Argentine Atlantic coast. The climate is temperate with oceanic influence, featuring mild winters, warm summers, and relatively high humidity. The coast and riverine environments support varied ecosystems and economic activities tied to the water.

History

The region has Indigenous roots prior to European contact. In the late 18th century, the area was settled by the Spanish as a fort and port at the mouth of the Río Negro to guard the southern frontier and support maritime activity. The colonial presence gave rise to the toponym Patagones, which later became the name associated with the municipality and its administrative unit.

Economy

Patagones’ economy centers on fishing and related activities, agriculture (notably grain and cattle farming), and services. Tourism has grown around waterfront promenades, historic architecture, and access to beaches and coastal landscapes, contributing to local employment and cultural promotion.
