It refers to a player who consistently engages in behaviors that hinder or sabotage their team's progress, often without a clear malicious intent or sometimes out of a perceived sense of amusement. This can manifest in various ways, such as intentionally failing objectives, distracting teammates, making poor strategic decisions, or refusing to cooperate.

The term is a portmanteau, combining the English word "pasta," often used colloquially to describe something poorly executed or clumsy, with "avataari," a Finnish word that can broadly translate to avatar or character. Thus, "pastaavat" essentially describes a player whose in-game actions are as clumsy or unhelpful as a "pasta avatar."

While "griefing" often implies deliberate malice aimed at upsetting other players, pastaavat can sometimes stem from a lack of skill, poor understanding of game mechanics, or a misguided attempt at humor.
