Parodondihaiguste

Parodondihaiguste is a Finnish term referring to a group of inflammatory diseases that affect the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. The term encompasses conditions such as gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums, and periodontitis, a more advanced disease that can damage the attachment levels and supporting bone.

In the development of parodondihaiguste, dental plaque biofilm plays a central role. The inflammatory response to the bacteria in the plaque can cause gum swelling, bleeding, and pocket formation between the gums and teeth. If the condition progresses, the supporting structures—gums, periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar bone—can be damaged, potentially leading to tooth mobility and loss.

Common signs and risk factors include red, swollen or tender gums that bleed during brushing, persistent bad breath, receding gums, and loosening teeth. Risk factors outside the mouth include smoking, poor glycemic control in diabetes, age, genetic predisposition, stress, hormonal changes, certain medications, and inadequate daily oral hygiene.

Diagnosis is based on a dental examination, including periodontal probing to measure pocket depths, assessment of gum recession, and radiographs to evaluate bone loss. Treatment aims to control infection and halt progression. It typically starts with professional cleaning (scaling and root planing), improved oral hygiene, and may include antibiotics. In more advanced cases, surgical procedures such as flap surgery,bone grafts, or guided tissue regeneration can be indicated.

Prevention focuses on effective daily oral care, regular dental visits, quitting smoking, and managing systemic conditions like diabetes. With early detection and appropriate care, many parodondihaiguste cases are controlled, and long-term outcomes improve.
