Parasoles

Parasoles are portable shade devices designed to shield people or objects from sunlight, and in many contexts they are used to provide rain protection as well. The term generally refers to sun protection, while umbrellas are more commonly associated with rain; however, many languages use the same word for both. Parasoles range from small, handheld parasols to large beach or garden parasols.

Historically, parasols appeared in ancient civilizations, with evidence from Egypt, Mesopotamia, China, and India. In Europe, parasols became popular as a fashion accessory from the 17th century onward, evolving from simple sun shields to folding mechanisms in the 18th century. Today, they are common across cultures, and specialized versions are used in tourism, hospitality, and outdoor events.

Construction and types: A parasol consists of a canopy, ribs, a central shaft, and a handle. Canopies may be made from canvas, cotton, silk, or modern synthetic fabrics such as polyester or pongee, often treated for UV resistance or water repellence. Frames range from wood or bamboo to steel or aluminum, with manual or automatic opening mechanisms. Variants include handheld sun parasols, beach parasols with wide, tiltable canopies, and garden parasols with crank mechanisms or tilt features. Ventilated canopies improve stability in wind.

Care and use: To prolong life, dry parasols before storage; clean the canopy with mild soap; avoid extended exposure to sun when not in use; replace damaged ribs or fabric as needed. Safety considerations include securing parasols in windy conditions and ensuring beach models do not obstruct walkways. In popular culture, parasols have served as fashion accessories and symbols of status in some eras.
