Palletlading

Palletlading refers to the process of arranging and securing goods on a pallet to form a unit load for transport and storage. The unit load is designed to maximize stability, optimize space, and enable efficient handling by forklifts, pallet jacks, and automated systems. Palletized loads are used across the freight, retail, and manufacturing sectors to improve loading speed, reduce damage, and simplify inventory control.

Common pallet types and standards vary by region. The European standard Euro pallet measures 800 by 1200 millimeters, while the North American standard is 40 by 48 inches. Pallets may be made of wood, plastic, or metal; wood is most common, but plastic is preferred for hygiene and reuse, and metal pallets are used for heavy or specialized goods. For international shipping, pallets are often stamped with ISPM 15 heat treatment to reduce pest risk.

Loading practices aim for even weight distribution and secure stacking. Pallets can be two-way or four-way entry, guiding how the pallet interacts with handling equipment. Goods are arranged to prevent crushing and shifting; securing methods include stretch wrap, banding, corner boards, and interlayer slip sheets. Load height and tamping must accommodate equipment reach and warehouse racking; pallets should be checked for damage, dirt, and infestations prior to use.

Benefits of palletlading include faster handling, reduced labor, safer storage, and easier stock control. Limitations involve damage from moisture, pest risk if not treated, misalignment increasing risk of tipping, and the need for compatible equipment and standards.
