Pakkingsstandards, or packaging standards, are the published specifications that define the design, materials, dimensions, performance, labeling, and disposal of packaging used for goods. They aim to protect products, ensure safety, facilitate handling and storage, and support efficient trade by providing common expectations across suppliers, manufacturers, and retailers.

Core areas include material specifications (cardboard, plastics, metal, glass), performance requirements (durability, barrier properties, stackability, and printability), and safety criteria (chemical migrants, food-contact compliance when applicable). They also cover labeling and information, such as handling instructions, recycling codes, country-of-origin marks, and data suitable for supply-chain systems (barcodes).

Testing and conformity: standard methods assess packaging performance under real-world conditions, such as drop tests, vibration, compression, climate aging, and tamper evidence. Conformity may be demonstrated by in-house testing or third-party verification within frameworks from ISO, EN, ASTM, or ISTA.

Regulatory and environmental context: packaging standards align with regulatory regimes and sustainability goals, including directives on packaging waste and recyclability. They promote circular economy objectives by specifying recyclability, recyclate content, and end-of-life labeling, and they support safe handling and transport of goods across borders.

Global landscape: standardization bodies—such as ISO, CEN, ISO/TC 122 (packaging and the environment) and national agencies—collaborate to harmonize requirements. Businesses adopt pakkingsstandards to reduce damage, speed distribution, comply with law, and communicate product information effectively in international supply chains.
