Pakkimises

Pakkimises is the Estonian term for packaging and refers to the process of preparing goods for handling, transport, storage, and sale by enclosing them in protective materials and providing labeling and information. The concept encompasses design choices, material selection, and the methods used to protect, present, and communicate about products.

The scope of pakkimises includes different packaging levels and materials. Primary packaging surrounds the product itself, secondary packaging groups multiple units, and tertiary packaging is used for bulk handling and logistics, such as pallets and crates. Common materials include paperboard, plastics, glass, metal, and composites, chosen for protection, cost, weight, and sustainability considerations. The protective functions cover mechanical protection, moisture and barrier control, tamper evidence, and containment for safe handling.

The pakkimises process often involves packaging engineering, risk assessment, and testing to ensure performance during transit and storage. This can include drop tests, vibration tests, and compatibility checks with labeling, sealing, and tamper-evident features. Compliance with regional and international standards and regulations, including labeling requirements and waste management guidelines, is also part of the process.

Sustainability has become a central consideration in pakkimises. Efforts focus on reducing material use, increasing recyclability and reusability, and optimizing supply chains to lower environmental impact, in line with directives such as those governing packaging waste. The efficiency and effectiveness of packaging influence cost, product protection, and customer experience.
