Pakketteling

Pakketteling (packaging) is the process of preparing goods for transport by enclosing them in appropriate packaging to protect them during handling, storage, and shipping. In Dutch usage, the term covers all activities from selecting packaging materials to sealing, labeling, and documentation. The aim is to safeguard products, optimize space, and facilitate efficient logistics.

The pakketteling workflow typically includes selecting suitable packaging based on the item's size, fragility, and destination; wrapping and securing items (such as boxing, crating, or palletizing); applying protective fill to prevent movement; and attaching labels, barcodes, and packing lists. In modern operations, many steps are automated or assisted by packing stations, conveyors, and sortation systems.

Common packaging types range from primary packaging (the item’s immediate container), secondary packaging (grouping multiple items), to tertiary packaging (pallets and loaded crates). Materials used include cardboard, plastic film, bubble or air pillows, paper, and fillers. Emphasis is placed on tamper-evidence, moisture protection, and compatibility with transport modes (air, sea, road, rail).

Regulatory and sustainability considerations shape pakketteling. Regulations on packaging waste, recyclability, and labeling influence material choices and disposal. Companies seek to minimize packaging while ensuring protection, embracing recyclable or reusable solutions and opting for suppliers with environmental certifications. The rise of e-commerce and cross-border shipping has heightened demand for efficient, compact, and secure packaging.
