It covers both inbound handling at warehouses and fulfillment centers and outbound handling toward end customers. The aim is to ensure accurate, timely, and undamaged delivery while managing costs and visibility.

Key activities include receiving and inspecting packages, labeling and documentation, sorting by destination, inventory control, picking and packing, carrier handoff, and last-mile delivery. Returns processing is also often considered part of pakkehåndtering, as it affects reverse logistics and inventory management.

Technologies enable efficiency and visibility: barcode scanning, RFID, warehouse management systems (WMS), transportation management systems (TMS), and real-time parcel tracking. Automated sorters, conveyors, and robotics are common in large fulfillment centers. Data standards such as GS1 barcodes facilitate interoperability between sender, carrier, and retailer.

Operations rely on diversified transport networks, including road, rail, air, and sea, with an increasing emphasis on urban last-mile solutions. International parcels require customs clearance and compliance with safety, privacy, and regulatory requirements. Key performance indicators include on-time delivery, sorting accuracy, damage rate, and cost per parcel.

Challenges include peak-season demand, last-mile inefficiency, theft and loss, packaging waste, and environmental impact. Trends focus on automation, smarter routing, contactless and same-day delivery, sustainability, and improved returns handling and visibility through digital platforms.
