The term combines *paigal* (meaning "place" or "location") and *dust* (a colloquial term for a magical or protective object), with *töid* indicating the act of making or performing. These practices were deeply rooted in pre-Christian Estonian beliefs and continued alongside Christian influences for centuries.

Paigaldustöid typically involved crafting small objects, such as woven straw figures, clay shapes, or knotted threads, which were believed to ward off evil spirits, ensure fertility, or protect livestock and crops. Common motifs included symbols of the sun, moon, or fertility, often tied to seasonal cycles.
