Pageant refers to a public display, procession, or ceremonial event, and by extension to competitive events in which individuals are presented to an audience and judged according to predetermined criteria. Historically, pageants were elaborate civic or religious displays in medieval and early modern Europe, often featuring floats, costumes, and staged tableaux. In many cultures the term also applied to public theatrical pageants and processions used to celebrate festivals or political events. In the modern era the word has become strongly associated with organized beauty competitions in which contestants are assessed on factors such as interview responses, stage presence, talent, and appearance, with winners awarded titles and prizes.

Most contemporary pageants for adults are organized as a sequence of rounds, including an interview or philosophy segment, a talent or performance portion, and a formal evening wear or national costume presentation. Judging panels often consider communication skills, poise, community involvement, and contribution to social causes. International and national organizations license franchises to run national pageants that select representatives for global events, such as Miss Universe and Miss World-style competitions, though the names and formats vary by country.

Pageants have cultural significance in many regions as entertainment and platforms for charitable work and personal opportunity. They also face scrutiny over issues such as body image, inclusivity, cost of participation, and the emphasis on appearance versus achievement.
