Padflächen

Padflächen are flat surfaces intended to serve as contact, bonding, or measurement points on various components and substrates. They are commonly found on electronic hardware, such as printed circuit boards (PCBs) and semiconductor devices, but also appear in other manufacturing contexts where reliable surface contacts are needed.

In PCBs, padflächen are copper areas that form the connection points for components, test probes, or heat dissipation paths. For surface-mount devices, pads come in standardized shapes and pitches that match component leads. To ensure solderability and corrosion resistance, the pads are typically finished with coatings such as ENIG (electroless nickel immersion gold), HASL (hot-dip tin), or immersion silver/gold. The chosen finish affects solder fillets, reliability, and electrical performance.

Design considerations include pad size and shape, spacing between pads, and the clearance around the pad for solder mask. The pad geometry influences thermal management, paste deposition for reflow soldering, and the ability of automated assembly equipment to place components accurately. Fiducials—specialized pads used for optical alignment by pick-and-place machines—are also a common feature.

Manufacturing processes for creating padflächen involve photolithography and etching or plating to define the pads, followed by the application of surface finishes. After assembly, pads are subjected to testing and inspection to verify connectivity and integrity. In addition to PCB use, padflächen are relevant in MEMS, sensor dies, and test fixtures, where precise, robust contact surfaces are essential.

Relibility considerations include avoiding pad delamination, solder joint fatigue, and corrosion, which can be mitigated by appropriate pad design, materials, and finishes.
