A paddle steamer is a type of steamship that is propelled using one or more paddle wheels, which are large wheels or discs with flat blades or paddles arranged around their circumference. These paddles dip into the water and push the vessel forward. Paddle steamers were a significant development in maritime history, emerging in the early 19th century.

The first successful steam-powered vessels used paddle wheels. Early designs often featured paddle wheels mounted on the sides of the hull, known as side-wheelers, or a single, larger wheel at the stern, called a stern-wheeler. The power source was a steam engine, which drove the paddle shafts. These vessels were particularly well-suited for navigating shallow rivers and canals due to their ability to operate in relatively shallow water.

Paddle steamers played a crucial role in transportation and commerce, especially on major waterways like the Mississippi River in the United States and the Ganges in India. They enabled faster and more reliable travel compared to sail-powered ships or horse-drawn barges. During periods of conflict, they were also adapted for military use, though their vulnerability to enemy fire and rough seas limited their effectiveness in open ocean warfare.

While highly influential, paddle steamers were gradually superseded by screw-propelled steamships and later by diesel-powered vessels. Screw propellers offered greater efficiency, better maneuverability, and were less susceptible to damage in rough conditions. Despite their decline in commercial use, some paddle steamers are preserved as historical artifacts or operate as tourist attractions, offering a nostalgic glimpse into the era of early steam navigation.
