Padawans

Padawan is a term used in the Star Wars fictional universe to denote a Jedi apprentice. A padawan is typically a young student who has begun formal instruction in the ways of the Force and in lightsaber combat, under the guidance of a Jedi Knight or Jedi Master. The relationship is mentor-apprentice, often described as a bond that shapes both the student’s training and the mentor’s duties. Padawans usually train at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant or accompany their master on field assignments, learning discipline, diplomacy, and moral judgment alongside combat techniques.

Training begins after early schooling and progresses through tiers of learning. Practically, a padawan studies the Force, practices lightsaber forms, and develops awareness, restraint, and compassion. The master assigns tasks and missions that test skill and judgment, and the padawan’s status is often signified by a ceremonial braid or other insignia in some eras of Star Wars storytelling.

The path from padawan to Jedi Knight is formal. A padawan must complete a series of trials representing skill, courage, and mastery of the Force, and then be accepted by the Jedi Council or the master who oversees the trials. Upon successful completion, the student is named a Jedi Knight; further advancement to Master takes additional experience and recognition.

In the wider Star Wars canon and lore, padawans are central to the Order’s training system and are frequently portrayed as the next generation of Jedi.
