A padawan is a term in the Star Wars universe used to describe a Jedi apprentice who trains under a Jedi Master or, in some cases, a Jedi Knight. The concept exists in both the official canon and the broader Legends material, though details can vary between versions. A padawan is typically a young Jedi who has progressed beyond basic initiate training and is learning to control the Force, wield a lightsaber, and follow the Jedi Code under close mentorship.

Training and responsibilities. Padawans are assigned to a Master who serves as their mentor, guiding their education, discipline, and moral development. They accompany their mentor on missions, study duel techniques, Force abilities, diplomacy, and the ethics of power. Their daily activities include sparring, study, and field experience, all while facing trials that test judgment, courage, and restraint. Padawans are expected to demonstrate responsibility and growth before advancing.

Path to knighthood. The path from padawan to Jedi Knight is formal and culminates in the Jedi Trials, a series of tests that assess skill, wisdom, and commitment to the Jedi Way. Successful completion leads to promotion to Jedi Knight by the Jedi Council. Depending on the story, a padawan may also be granted knighthood by a Master or the Council after notable achievements or extraordinary circumstances.
