Packstückverwaltung

Packstückverwaltung describes the planning, control and documentation of physical packing units (Packstücke) that move through the supply chain. A Packstück is a distinct unit such as a carton, pallet or container that can be identified, stored and transported separately. The aim is to ensure accurate identification, traceability and handling efficiency across warehousing and freight processes.

Key aspects include assigning a unique identifier, labeling with GS1-compliant codes (such as SSCC and GTIN), and data capture via barcodes or RFID. Packstücke are managed in conjunction with warehouse management systems (WMS), enterprise resource planning systems (ERP) and transportation management systems (TMS) to support packing plans, order consolidation, cartonization and load building. Processes typically cover inbound receipt and packing of items into packstücke, labeling, recording packstück data, tracking through the transport chain, and updating inventory and order status. Consolidation and deconsolidation of packstücke, as well as re-packing while maintaining traceability, are common tasks.

Standards and data exchange play a central role. GS1 standards, especially SSCC for shipping containers and GTIN for items, enable cross-partner traceability. Data exchange often occurs via EDI, API or XML, and event data can be captured with systems such as EPCIS for supply chain visibility.

Implementation is usually part of WMS/ERP landscapes, with responsibilities across warehouse operators, logistics service providers and IT teams. Benefits include improved traceability, higher inventory accuracy, reduced labeling errors, faster handling and better delivery performance. Challenges include data quality, system integration and maintaining consistent identifiers across partners.
