SSCC

SSCC stands for Serial Shipping Container Code. It is a globally unique 18-digit number used to identify a logistic unit—such as a pallet, case, or container—as it moves through the supply chain. The SSCC is typically encoded in a GS1-128 barcode and may be carried on the outer packaging label using the AI 00 application identifier to denote a Serial Shipping Container Code.

Structure and calculation: The 18 digits consist of an extension digit, the GS1 company prefix, a serial reference, and a final check digit. The extension digit is used to indicate versioning or packaging scenarios. The GS1 company prefix identifies the organization responsible for the SSCC, while the serial reference provides a unique number within that prefix. The last digit is a check digit calculated with a Modulo 10 algorithm to verify the integrity of the 17 preceding digits.

Usage and scope: SSCCs are issued by a company through its GS1 member organization and must be globally unique. They are designed to identify the specific logistic unit rather than the items inside it. SSCCs enable automated data capture and end-to-end visibility in warehouse management, transportation management, and related information systems. They facilitate activities such as tracking, cross-docking, and shipment reconciliation across national and international supply chains.
