The name blends PMMA with the German word basierte, meaning based on, and reflects the term’s use in European literature to distinguish PMMA-derived formulations from alternatives made with other polymers. PMMAbasierte encompasses a range of formulations, from neat PMMA to PMMA composites and layered structures.

Key properties of PMMAbasierte systems derive from PMMA’s optical clarity, weathering resistance, and processability, while modifications can tailor toughness, chemical resistance, or surface energy. Common processing methods include solvent casting, spin coating, hot embossing, and laser micromachining, sometimes combined with post-fabrication surface treatments.

Applications span optics (lenses and light guides), microfluidics (PMMA-based channels and chips), protective and decorative coatings, and biomedical devices where PMMA substrates provide optical access and biocompatibility. In research, PMMAbasierte materials are used to study interfacial phenomena, adhesion, and thin-film behavior.
