PF2

PF2 is the shorthand for Pathfinder Second Edition, a fantasy tabletop role-playing game published by Paizo Inc. released in 2019 as the successor to Pathfinder First Edition. The system aims to streamline certain mechanics while preserving the high-fantasy feel of the setting and the broad options that players expect from Pathfinder. Core design elements include a three-action economy, a unified proficiency system, and a wide range of character customization choices.

Gameplay centers on a d20-based mechanic. Most rolls are resolved by rolling a 20-sided die and adding modifiers to meet or beat a target number, such as an armor class, a saving throw DC, or a skill check. Proficiency ranks—Trained, Expert, Master, and Legendary—add fixed bonuses that scale with character level. Saves use the standard Fortitude, Reflex, and Will categories. The three-action economy lets players perform up to three actions on their turn, with various actions such as attacks, movement, or feats, and reactions that can occur outside a character’s turn.

Character creation emphasizes diverse options. Players select an ancestry (the game’s term for race), a heritage, a background, and a class. Feats expand abilities across general, skill, ancestral, and class categories, enabling broad customization. The system also includes a structured skill system and multiple ways to specialize through feats and multiclass-like choices, all designed to scale with level from 1 to 20.

Paizo publishes Core Rulebook and a range of supplements such as Bestiary and Gamemastery Guide, along with adventure paths and standalone adventures. Pathfinder Society and other organized-play initiatives use PF2 rules, contributing to a robust community and ongoing development. Overall, PF2 is noted for its depth and modular customization, balanced by a learning curve for new players.
