PETFolie

PETFolie refers to a thin film made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET). It is produced by extrusion of PET resin, followed by biaxial orientation to improve strength, clarity, and dimensional stability. PETFolie is valued for its high transparency, stiffness, chemical resistance, and relatively good barrier properties against moisture and gases, making it suitable for a range of packaging and industrial uses.

Common properties of PETFolie include high gloss, rigidity, and the ability to be heat-sealed when appropriate coatings are applied. Typical thicknesses span from about 12 to 125 micrometers, with thinner grades used for labels or flexible packaging and thicker grades for protective laminates or structural components. Variants include uncoated films, heat-sealable coatings, and a variety of surface treatments such as anti-fog, anti-static, or UV-protective coatings. Metalized PETFolie, achieved by a thin aluminum layer, is used to enhance barrier properties and create reflective or opaque finishes in packaging and solar applications.

Applications of PETFolie are broad and include flexible food and confectionery packaging, clear labels for beverages and other containers, laminates for cartons and displays, protective overlays, and components in electronics and solar modules. In packaging, PETFolie is often used alone or in multilayer structures with other polymers to achieve desired barrier and seal properties.

End-of-life considerations center on recycling, as PET is widely recycled in bottle streams, but metallized or coated films and multilayer structures pose recycling challenges.
