PCBsubstraten

PCBsubstraten, or PCB substrates, are the insulating base layers of printed circuit boards. They provide mechanical support for copper traces, electrical insulation between conductors, and a dielectric medium that influences signal integrity and thermal behavior. The choice of substrate affects board rigidity, temperature handling, and frequency performance.

Common materials include FR-4, a glass-fiber-reinforced epoxy laminate that is inexpensive and widely used for rigid boards. FR-2 and FR-3 are phenolic resins with paper or fiber content used for low-cost, low-performance applications. For high-frequency or high-speed boards, materials such as polyimide (for flexible and rigid-flex circuits), PTFE-based laminates with ceramic fillers, or ceramic substrates (alumina, aluminum nitride) are employed due to favorable dielectric and thermal properties. Flexible circuits often rely on polyimide or polyester substrates. Aluminum-backed and other metal-core substrates are used for high-power applications requiring efficient heat spreading.

Key electrical and thermal properties include dielectric constant (Dk), dissipation factor (Df), glass transition temperature (Tg), and thermal conductivity. FR-4 typically offers a Dk around 4.0–4.5 and Tg around 120–150°C, with moderate thermal conductivity. Flexible and RF substrates aim for lower Dk and Df and higher Tg, with PTFE-based laminates offering very low losses at microwave frequencies. Thermal management is a major consideration, as substrate choice affects heat dissipation and board reliability.

Manufacturing involves copper-clad laminates and prepregs bonded by lamination. Copper traces are formed by etching, and board vias and components are integrated through drilling and plating processes. Substrates are selected to meet mechanical specs, thermal limits, and regulatory requirements such as RoHS.
