Párafékezés

Párafékezés, often translated as "steam braking" or "vapor braking," refers to a braking system that utilizes steam or vapor to generate the force needed to slow down or stop a vehicle. This technology was primarily developed and used in the early days of mechanical transportation, particularly with steam-powered vehicles and locomotives.

The fundamental principle behind párafékezés involves the generation and controlled release of steam. In steam locomotives, for example, steam produced in the boiler could be diverted to a separate braking cylinder. When steam pressure was applied to a piston within this cylinder, it would move and engage brake shoes with the wheels. This friction would then reduce the rotational speed of the wheels, thus slowing the train.

Variations of párafékezés existed. Some systems used the exhaust steam, which was already under pressure, for braking purposes. Others might have employed a dedicated steam source for the braking mechanism. The effectiveness of these systems depended on factors such as steam pressure, the size of the braking cylinders, and the condition of the brake shoes and wheels.

While párafékezés was a crucial innovation in its time, enabling heavier and faster steam-powered transport, it has largely been superseded by more efficient and reliable braking technologies. Modern vehicles, including electric trains and automobiles, utilize systems like pneumatic brakes, hydraulic brakes, and regenerative braking, which offer superior control, responsiveness, and performance.
