Ozonengeur

Ozonengeur, often translated as ozone smell, is a distinct odor commonly associated with ozone (O3). This scent is frequently described as sharp, clean, or reminiscent of the air after a thunderstorm. It arises from the presence of ozone, a molecule composed of three oxygen atoms. Ozone is a naturally occurring gas in the Earth's atmosphere, particularly in the stratosphere where it forms the ozone layer, protecting life from harmful ultraviolet radiation.

The characteristic smell of ozone is often perceived in environments where ozone is generated, either naturally or artificially. Natural sources include lightning strikes, which break apart oxygen molecules (O2) and allow them to recombine into ozone. Artificial sources include certain electrical equipment, such as photocopiers, laser printers, and some air purifiers that utilize corona discharge to produce ozone. High-voltage electrical discharges, like those in sparking electrical devices, can also create this odor.

While often associated with a sense of freshness, prolonged exposure to high concentrations of ozone can be harmful. It is an irritant to the respiratory system and can exacerbate conditions like asthma. Therefore, while the smell itself might be perceived as pleasant or indicative of a clean environment, its presence in significant quantities can signal a potential health concern. The threshold for human detection of the ozonengeur is relatively low, meaning people can often smell it even when concentrations are not yet considered dangerous.
