Oxidationsbarheten

Oxidationsbarheten, or oxidizability, is the propensity of a chemical species to undergo oxidation, that is, to lose electrons or increase its oxidation state, under specified conditions. It is a key concept in redox chemistry and materials science and is distinct from, but related to, reducibility and oxidative strength. In practice, oxidizability is often discussed in terms of oxidation potential; substances that readily lose electrons are more easily oxidized under appropriate conditions.

The concept is closely tied to redox potentials and to a molecule's electronic structure. Compounds with relatively high-energy frontier orbitals, or low ionization energy, are typically more easily oxidized. The stability of the oxidized form influences oxidizability; delocalization and resonance can stabilize oxidized species and thereby enhance oxidizability. Importantly, oxidizability depends on the environment: solvent, pH, temperature, and the strength of the oxidant all play critical roles.

Measurement and estimation are usually indirect. Electrochemical techniques such as cyclic voltammetry yield redox potentials related to the ease of oxidation. Chemical oxidants, spectroscopic probes, or computational estimates of ionization energy and HOMO level are also used.

Examples: alkali metals and some transition metals in low oxidation states show high oxidizability, readily forming oxides or oxoanions. Organic compounds with easily removed electrons from the HOMO, such as many phenols and amines, also exhibit high oxidizability. In practice, oxidizability informs corrosion resistance, atmospheric aging of materials, and redox-based synthesis.
