Overscrubbing

Overscrubbing refers to the practice of exfoliating the skin too frequently or too aggressively. While exfoliation is beneficial for removing dead skin cells and promoting cell turnover, overdoing it can lead to a compromised skin barrier. This can manifest as redness, irritation, dryness, flakiness, and increased sensitivity.

The skin's natural barrier, the stratum corneum, is crucial for protecting the body from environmental aggressors and retaining moisture. Aggressive scrubbing, especially with harsh physical exfoliants like coarse scrubs or abrasive brushes, can strip away this protective layer. Chemical exfoliants, such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), can also cause overexfoliation if used too often or at too high a concentration.

Signs of overscrubbing include a persistently red or inflamed complexion, a feeling of tightness, increased breakouts, and a dull or rough skin texture despite exfoliation efforts. Damaged skin may also become more susceptible to sun damage and infection.

To avoid overscrubbing, it's important to listen to your skin's needs. Generally, exfoliating once or twice a week is sufficient for most skin types. Gentler methods, like using a soft washcloth or a mild chemical exfoliant, are often preferable. If you notice any signs of irritation, it's best to reduce or temporarily cease exfoliation and focus on repairing the skin barrier with soothing and hydrating ingredients.
