Overpreparation

Overpreparation refers to the practice of planning and rehearsing to a degree that exceeds what is necessary to perform a task successfully. It involves extensive information gathering, prolonged practice, and detailed contingency planning that surpass the complexity and time constraints of the task. While preparation is generally beneficial, overpreparation can yield diminishing returns and may reduce flexibility.

Contexts include academic work, professional projects, sports, public speaking, and crisis response, where high reliability is valued but tasks vary in required time and uncertainty. In some cases, overpreparation can cover for gaps in knowledge or anxiety about performance, and can create a false sense of security or procrastination.
