Overlockmaskiner

Overlockmaskiner, often called sergers, are specialized sewing machines designed to sew seams, trim excess fabric, and overcast edges simultaneously. They use multiple threads, typically three to five, to create a durable and professional-looking finish. Unlike a conventional sewing machine that uses a bobbin, an overlock machine uses loopers to create its stitches.

The primary function of an overlock machine is to produce a clean and strong seam that prevents fabric edges from fraying. This is achieved through a cutting blade that trims the fabric edge just before the needles and loopers form the overlock stitch. The stitch itself is characterized by threads looping over the raw edge of the fabric, enclosing it.

Overlock machines offer various stitch types, including 3-thread overlock, 4-thread overlock, and rolled hems, each suited for different fabric types and finishing requirements. A 3-thread overlock is common for light-duty seams and decorative edges, while a 4-thread overlock provides a stronger seam with added security. Rolled hems are ideal for delicate fabrics like silk or chiffon.

While they excel at finishing edges and sewing stretchy fabrics, overlock machines are not typically used for tasks like buttonholes or topstitching, which are better handled by a standard sewing machine. They are an invaluable tool for garment construction, home décor projects, and anyone seeking a professional finish on their sewing.
